1. Social Change Lab: Call for Ideas

    The delivery of quality healthcare remains a major challenge in Nigeria. Towards this effort, the Social Change Lab for Health is giving you the opportunity to be a change agent that will contribute to tackling the most pressing issues in healthcare delivery.

    From now until Friday, 7th of March 2014, we are calling for new or already existing ideas that will address identified priority areas in healthcare delivery using technology. These priority areas include:

    • Better collect and seamlessly distribute patient’s medical information wherever care is needed to ensure more effective engagement with healthcare providers.
    • Develop targeted and innovative platforms that give citizens the opportunity to access and share relevant health information to properly manage their conditions and interactions with the Nigerian health system.
    • Facilitate more effective platforms that give citizens the capability to access general and specialized healthcare is a way that is direct, appraised and operational.
    • Enable the use of more effective and comprehensive workflows that encourage better communication between health professionals within the hospitals to facilitate better service for patients.

    infoDev at the World Bank and CRDF Global with support from Co-creation Hub (CcHUB) in Nigeria are announcing VentureOut, a new initiative to propel your mobile apps into enticing international markets.

    The VentureOut Challenge will pitch your apps against mobile apps from 31 countries where you stand a chance of to be one of the Top 9 entrepreneurs who will pitch at Dragon’s Den in Moldova, this October 30 – 31 for $10,000 in seed funding. Mobile Apps developers and entrepreneurs can submit their mobile applications from August 9 – September 2, 2013.

    To be eligible, applicant must be 18 years or older and be ready and available to present your app or startup if selected as a finalist during trainings and business pitch presentations in Chisinau, Moldova on October 30- 31 2013.

    Does your mobile app meet submission criteria below?

    • Venture is for-profit and less than three years old from date of launching startup
    • Entrepreneur is interested in expanding their app into new geographies in the future
    • Product or service is currently in a user testing stage, pilot stage, or available on the market
    • Venture is either self-funded or has external financing (either from public or private sources)
    • Mobile app ventures can be B2C, i.e. targeted towards retail distribution, for use on individual handsets; or B2B, i.e. enterprise solutions powered by or using or enhancing mobile technology.

  3. Innovation Prize for Africa 2014 Competition


    The African Innovation Foundation (AIF) is delighted to announce the call for the 2014 Innovation Prize for Africa (IPA). The prize honours and encourages innovative achievements that contribute toward developing new products, increasing efficiency or saving cost in Africa.

    The prize also promotes among young African men and women the pursuit of science, technology and engineering careers as well as business opportunities with potentials of contributing to sustainable development in Africa.

    The IPA is focused on:

    • Mobilizing leaders from all sectors to fuel African innovation
    • Promoting innovation across Africa in key sectors through the competition
    • Promoting science, technology and engineering as a rewarding career path among African
    youth.
    • Encouraging entrepreneurs, innovators, funding bodies and business development service
    providers to exchange ideas and explore innovative business opportunities.

    The IPA anticipates contributing to the following outcomes:

    • Increased commercialization of research and development (R&D) outputs in Africa
    • Increased funding of start-ups, adoption of new and emerging technologies and accelerated
    growth of an innovative and dynamic private sector; and
    • Increased economic activity and African led development that results in lasting impact.

    1. IPA 2014 PRIORITY AREAS

    The 2014 IPA recognizes innovative breakthroughs that unlock new African potential in the following five priority areas: agriculture and agribusiness; environment, energy and water; health and well-being; ICTs and manufacturing and service industry.

  4. Microsoft Developer Bootcamp


    Microsoft has launched the Africa Apps team, a group of Developer Platform Evangelists, to work with software developers in Nigeria, Ghana and Africa at large. The team is made up of experts on Microsoft technologies such as Visual Studio, Kinect, Windows Azure, Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Bing Search and Open Source technology all dedicated to helping African developers build, scale and market their innovations across the World.

    There will be training tracks covering Microsoft Azure, Windows Phone, and of course Windows 8. Interested participants are advised to register for individual tracks to enable them make the most of the the training sessions. Here is a breakdown what to expect at the event.
